Help Make-A-Wish and Write a Letter to Santa

For each letter Macy's will donate $1.00 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a non-for-profit that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. Writing materials are provided.

Sneak Peek Tours of WisCEL Centers

Wondering what all the excitement is about at Wendt Commons and College Library? Now you have a chance to get the scoop on this new approach to teaching.

After a long summer of remodeling, both libraries are unveiling their new WisCEL (Wisconsin Collaboratory for Enhanced Learning) spaces to the University community with a sneak peek on Monday, November 21 from 10 am to 6 pm. While these multi-use learning spaces, located on Wendt's 4th floor and in room 3250 of College Library, are still "works in progress," students, staff and faculty can learn more about how they will be used once the labs open officially in February 2012.

New Color Scanners

Tired of trying to decipher scanned charts in greyscale? Wendt Commons has added two new color scanners on its 2nd floor. The scanners allow users to scan documents in color and send them to an email address. There is no cost to scan documents. Both scanners also provide black and white copying at a low cost.

Wendt's Patent Service Gets a New Name

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) announced that its nationwide network of Patent and Trademark Depository Libraries, which includes Wendt Commons, will become known as Patent and Trademark Resource Centers starting October 1, 2011. The name change signifies a major shift from the USPTO's traditional “paper depository” model to a new focus on electronic information access and training.

Wendt Commons will continue to offer a wide-variety of patent and trademark searching and information services. For a detailed list of those services, see http://wendt.library.wisc.edu/help_with_research/patents.

Knovel University Challenge begins Sept. 12

The Knovel University Challenge starts on September 12, 2011, and is open to all University of Wisconsin-Madison students, staff and faculty. You have until (midnight) December 1st to submit your answers and contact information via the challenge page and the challenge Facebook page here.

All entries with a total of 3 correct answers in the same difficulty level will be placed into a single random drawing for: (1) iPad 2, (1) Cash, (8) Cool Stuff and up to (10) iPod Nanos for qualifying schools. The drawing will take place on December 2nd, 2011.

Richard West Published in Picturing Tolkien

Wendt Commons librarian Richard West's essay "Neither the Shadow nor the Twilight: The Love Story of Aragorn and Arwen in Literature and Film" was recently published in the book Picturing Tolkien: Essays on Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings Film Trilogy (edited by Janice M. Bogstad and Philip E. Kaveny). West, who has worked at Wendt Commons Library since 1976 as the serials and technical services librarian, is a noted Tolkien scholar.

WisCEL Construction Update

Students and faculty ready to embrace a new level of electronic learning will have to wait just a little bit longer.

Construction of the WisCEL learning lab that started this past June on Wendt Commons' 4th floor will continue through the beginning of the Fall semester. Work is expected to end in the next several weeks with the opening tentatively scheduled for mid-October. WisCEL, short for Wisconsin Collaboratory for Enhanced Learning, is an innovative approach to teaching and learning that leverages the latest technology.

Zotero Development Workshop

On Monday, April 11th, join Zotero community developer Avram Lyon, the primary translator reviewer who's helped to create many translators and has developed for Multilingual Zotero, to learn more about Translator Creation, Citation Style Language, the Zotero API, and using Zotero for your own scholarly endeavors. Join him for one or all of the following sessions:

Translators allow Zotero to detect and pull in citation information from web sites, including library catalogs, databases...you name it. The great thing is that if you create a new translator or make changes to an existing one, these updates can be bundled with subsequent Zotero releases to help others with their scholarly endeavors. You can also use the translators you create locally on your computer.

CSL is an XML language that allows you to create new citation and bibliographic styles. Many of the styles you know and use now within Zotero are created by community developers. If you need one that is not currently present in Zotero's CSL library, you can create your own - and this portion of the workshop will show you how to do that.

A Message to Transfer Students:

Greetings from Wendt Commons Library. As a transfer student, you may have to adapt quickly to UW-Madison's large and complex library system. If you are unfamiliar with library tools and services at UW Madison, here are two tips for success that will make your life easier as a transfer student:

1. Meet Your Librarian. Your subject liaison librarian will help you find quality information for your assignments, and show you the best information resources for your major. For example, your librarian can show you how to find and search appropriate research databases, find research guides, or learn how to manage citations. There are subject liaison librarians for all majors at UW. If you do not know who your librarian is, we will refer you to the right person.

2. Attend a Transfer Students & UW-Madison Libraries: What You Really Need to Know workshop. This workshop covers an introduction to the many things the UW-Madison libraries offer: MadCat (the library catalog), journal databases, other electronic materials, important services such as book retrieval and your online library account, and ways to get help with your research. There will be an opportunity to ask any questions you might have about the libraries.

This workshop starts with some of the basics of finding online images for use in multiple contexts including Google Images and Creative Commons. The session ends by looking at some of the specialized resources at the UW such as ARTstor and the UW Digital Collections. “Knots, Braids and Twinings,” an exhibit by noted local watercolorist and UW Systems academic planner, Helen Klebesadel, explores literal and symbolic approaches to pattern and connection. The exhibit particularly focuses on an aspect of mathematics known as “Knot Theory.” This is known as topology, the mathematical study of the properties that are preserved through deformations, twistings and stretchings of objects. Knot Theory is inspired by knots which appear in daily life, such as shoelaces, string and rope. A mathematician’s knot differs in that the ends are joined together into a circle to prevent it from becoming undone. Topologists consider knots as if the space surrounding them were a viscous fluid in which the knot can be pushed about smoothly without intersecting itself, despite twists, twines and manipulations. While mathematical studies of knots began in the 19th century, more recently knot theory has been used to study the action of DNA, and it may be very important to the construction of quantum computers.

The exhibit opens Friday, October 8, in the Wendt Art Gallery, just inside the building entrance. There will also be an informal brownbag lunch discussion with artist Helen Klebesadel, Wednesday, October 20th, noon-1:00 p.m. in room 329 of Wendt Commons. Some paintings will be offered for sale to the public. For more information see the Wendt Art Gallery website.

To expand their impact on College of Engineering teaching, learning and research, the Engineering Learning Center, Engineering Media Services and Wendt Library are consolidating under the new name “Wendt Commons.”

This consolidation will provide college faculty and staff a “one-stop-shopping” approach to teaching and learning services that will support increased innovation in teaching and technology-enhanced learning. Students will also see benefits from this approach outside the classroom as collaborations within the college allow other student services to be made available within the Wendt Commons learning environment.

To help you with your teaching and course development, Wendt Commons brings together a team of educational professionals, including an instructional designer with engineering/scientific pedagogical and teaching expertise (currently under recruitment), learning technologists, media specialists, IT professionals, librarians, and the college assessment director. Highlights of how they can help you beginning in fall 2010:

Using eCOW2 or other learning technologies, there is now help during the day - call to talk to someone at 265-7811, e-mail ecow2@engr.wisc.edu, or drop in to 411 Wendt Commons (Library).
Using and creating video and other rich media
Improving students’ information use via information skills development sessions and/or resource pages
Strengthening your proposals for engineering education-related grants and awards (Engineering Beyond Boundaries, MIU, NSF, etc.), Teaching and Learning Services staff can help strengthen assessment plans and make recommendations for effective implementation plans.

What other new things are happening at Wendt? Like libraries across the country, the dramatic shift to digital collections has presented opportunities to use library space in new ways. There are currently plans underway to develop new teaching space on the fourth floor of Wendt Commons, as well as to expand support for group study and for supplemental instruction and tutoring.

“We see a great opportunity to recast Wendt as a center for educational innovation and transformation for the college,” says Wendt Commons Director Deborah Helman. “We are providing services and spaces that help faculty develop and deliver their courses in ways that promote student success.”

Wendt Commons staff is located in Wendt Library (soon to be Wendt Commons) and in Engineering Hall. The Wendt Commons transformation is just beginning and development of services will continue to be driven by faculty, staff and student needs.

Zotero is a free, open source Firefox extension that allows you to store citation information, web page snapshots, and object files on your computer or on the Zotero server. Zotero "senses" citation information on a page and allows you to automatically gather that information. It allows note taking, organizing in folders, and generating formatted citations. You can tag and search your records. It can be integrated with Word and OpenOffice.org for in-text citing.

Engineers Without Borders at UW-Madison wins United Nations award

Work on a project to provide a Haitian community with hydroelectric power has won the University of Wisconsin-Madison's chapter of Engineers Without Borders a prestigious United Nations engineering award.

"This is a huge honor, and it feels really good to have the project recognized at such a high level," says Kyle Ankenbauer, a civil engineering student and co-manager of the Haiti project. "The award will help generate a lot of momentum behind this project since it's been recognized by the UN."

For much of the year, the Saint-Cyr River in northern Haiti is a docile trickle one foot deep. However, when the late spring rains bear down on the Saint-Cyr, the river swells in some points to be more than 30 feet across and 10 feet deep.

This volatility left a sinking feeling in the student members of the UW-Madison chapter of Engineers Without Borders when they realized the extent of the flooding during their trip to Haiti in June to begin building a hydroelectric power generator. The site for the generator was in one of the areas most affected by flooding.

The students rallied to find a safer site, and they are currently working to construct a mini-hydroelectric power generator at the new site, which will provide three to five kilowatt hours of electricity to a school, library and church in Bayonnais, Haiti. The generator will also serve as a pilot project for a larger, 15- to 25-kilowatt generator the group may build for a community clinic currently in design.

Ankenbauer and UW-Madison chapter president Eyleen Chou, a mechanical engineering student, made a trip to Stuttgart, Germany, to accept $22,400 and a gold medal Mondialogo Engineering Award for the chapter.

The award is a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and Daimler initiative to recognize engineering achievements aimed at meeting United Nations millennium development goals and fostering intercultural dialogue. The award was presented at the Mondialogo Symposium.

Engineers Without Borders is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving underdeveloped countries and communities around the world.

In addition to Haiti, the active UW-Madison chapter has projects in Rwanda, Kenya, El Salvador and Red Cliff, Wis. The Haiti project is unique because the UW-Madison chapter is collaborating extensively with other EWB chapters and NGOs. They share the Mondialogo award with Quisqueya University in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Bayonnais native and engineer Kenold Decimus joined Ankenbauer and Chou in Germany.

This is the second time the EWB-UW group has won a Mondialogo award; in 2005, the Rwanda project won a bronze award and about $7,000.

The University of Colorado-Boulder launched the first chapter of EWB in 2000 and a bridge project in Haiti was one of its earliest initiatives. Graduate student Scott Hamel was with the project from the beginning in 2002, and when he came to UW-Madison to pursue a Ph.D. in civil and environmental engineering, he encouraged the EWB-UW group to get involved.

The UW-Madison group did in 2006 and continued work on the bridge project in collaboration with the EWB San Francisco professional chapter (which currently is designing the clinic), a nongovernmental organization in Haiti and a church in North Carolina that now will support a salary for a local community member trained to maintain the hydroelectric generator. In addition to finishing and repairing the bridge after Hurricane Hannah, the EWB-UW group is currently repairing a 10-mile pipe that carries fresh water through Bayonnais and was recently damaged in a hurricane.

For Hamel, the connections he made with local people are why he continued to stay involved with the Haiti project.

"It's the poorest country in the western hemisphere," he says. "I feel a sense of responsibility toward people who haven't had the same opportunities I've had, and the people I've met in Haiti are my friends now."

Ankenbauer says the people of Bayonnais want to help improve their community. "We're simply bringing technology to people who are capable of supporting it and using it to better their community," he says.

Bucky Wagon is going green

UW-Madison's College of Engineering plans to make the Bucky Wagon more eco-friendly.

Over the next year, students from the college's six vehicle project teams and undergraduate mechanical engineering design students will transform the Bucky Wagon into an electric-powered vehicle with a hydraulic braking system, power brakes and power steering. The vehicle's exterior, wheels and hubcaps will not change.

The bright red Bucky Wagon brings Badger spirit to football Saturdays and the Homecoming festivities each fall. Until 2001, the Bucky Wagon carried the Spirit Squad to Camp Randall on game days. The vehicle also appears as various community parades and university events.

Recognized by its bright red exterior, the 1932 LaFrance fire engine was donated to the Wisconsin Alumni Association by alumni Jay J. and Norma Normington in 1971.

Mechanical engineering faculty associate Glenn Bower will lead the project, which you can follow through the Bucky Wagon blog.
